BATON ROUGE - Local dermatologist Dr. Ann Zedlitz visited News 2 at 4 with some great news about the ways a proper diet can influence the overall quality of your skin. Along with a regular skincare regimen, Dr. Z says some real benefit can be derived from taking the time to choose healthy foods that will lead to a more healthy looking you. Below are some of the food groups and their associated benefits that Dr. Z went over during her segment:

Fruit:
Oranges - Vitamin C (antioxidant) helps build collagen (body can't make collagen without it)
Apples - Antioxidant
Blueberries - Anti-inflammatory
Strawberries - Anti-inflammatory
Cherries - Especially Acerola have high vitamin C

Vegetables:
Spinach-green leafy - Increase moisture and elastin
Snap peas/carrots - Individual packages quick and easy
Soybeans from freezer - Pop in microwave and eat instead of popcorn
Kale - superfood gold standard

Nuts: (Careful on portion size-high calorie)
Walnuts - Omega 3
Almonds - Vitamin E

Fish:
Salmon - Fish oil/Omega 3 (Wild is better than farm raised. The color is added in farm raised. Whole Foods is a good place to find it.)
Oysters - High in zinc, which has been shown to help acne

Misc:
Green Tea - Antioxidant
Avocado - Niacin which is anti-inflammatory
Vitamin A high foods - Milk, carrots, sweet potatoes
Mushrooms - Riboflavin (B2), good for rosacea

Dr. Z says the benefits of these foods are additive. The more good food you eat, the better your skin will end up looking. To learn more about Dr. Z's practice, check out her website.
