Rape suspect hospitalized after apparent suicide attempt; court hearing delayed

BAKER - The man suspected of impersonating an officer and raping a 17-year-old has been rushed to a hospital after he reportedly tried to kill himself Tuesday.

Last week, the East Baton Rouge district attorney filed a motion to revoke the bond of Mark Russell. Russell, who has a history of sex crimes, was jailed with a $13,000 bond despite facing serious charges like impersonating a cop, rape, and false imprisonment.

A hearing was set for Tuesday to address the DA's issue with the seemingly low bond, but that hearing was delayed after EMS was called to Russell's home that same morning. Sources tell WBRZ that Russell was rushed to the hospital after he slit his wrists.

Baker police said Russell was driving what appeared to be an unmarked police car when he stopped a man in late April. Russell convinced the 17-year-old to go back to his house, where he allegedly assaulted him. Russell was previously convicted in 1993 of rape, molestation of a juvenile, and sexual battery.

Russell is currently being treated in an area hospital. His hearing has been pushed to May 17.
