Lower Livingston Parish still flooded
MAUREPAS - People in lower Livingston Parish are still dealing with flooding from last weekend, and some residents in Maurepas blame Ascension Parish for some of the high water.
They point to a pumping station in neighboring Ascension Parish that sends water into the Blind River that flows into Lake Maurepas. Flood waters trapped people who live in Chinquapin Landing off Highway 22 Monday. Fast forward to Thursday, and they are still waiting for the water to go down.
"How can you dump water from your parish onto us, and you've got not only my neighbor but probably four or five other neighbors that it went into their houses," said Maurepas resident Sheilla Picou. "So to save your parish I guess from hundreds of homes, I guess it's ok to flood three or four of ours."
Ascension Parish drainage experts like Bill Roux say the pumps are not responsible for flooding in Livingston Parish. Roux says the water flows off into a large area of land between the pumps and Lake Maurepas. Also, he says it's impossible for the water to flow upstream.
"Now if it was directly a half-mile below our pump station they would have a credible argument, but that far up going north away from the natural flow of the system is totally impossible," said Roux.
While some Maurepas residents disagree, they are more worried about what's to come this weekend. Right now, the water is still too close for comfort for several people.
"It's going to bring the water right back up. If the wind changes out of the southwest and starts going to the east with the water we have we'll probably have as much or more," said Picou. "My neighbors just got the water out of their home. It's probably going to go back in it again."
The WBRZ News 2 weather team expects a little more than two inches of rain in that area over the weekend. However, they do not foresee a further rise in the rivers in lower Livingston Parish.
