AMITE - A home along Sawmill Road in Amite suffered damage from a fire early Wednesday morning.

However, one thing that survived the fire was a picture of Jesus, barely affected.

Now, people in St. Helena Parish are calling the picture's survival a Holy Week miracle.

Lekeshia Self lives at the home that was damaged in the fire. She had just gotten back to the store when she noticed the top of her roof was smoking.

Multiple fire districts responded, including the Hillsdale Volunteer Fire Department.

“They were able to stop the fire from spreading around, but you know the smoke pretty much melted a lot of stuff all through the whole house,” Self said. “It just actually resembles the fact that it lets me know that Jesus is real."

That photo has even more meaning behind it because it actually belonged to Self’s mother before her. Self believes the fact that it was saved is a sign.

“My mom just passed away in January of 2026, and it was actually her photo, and I would look at that photo and think of her,” Self said.

Self says that even though it is a very sad occasion, she knows that Jesus and her mom are with her.

“It’s actually probably my mom telling me to change my life. Ever since my mom passed away, I haven’t been able to really even focus. Just telling me to not worry about what people are doing and slow down and think about what’s going on in life,” Self said.

People around St. Helena Parish say that the photo being spared cannot be a coincidence — especially with it being Holy Week.

“I’m 78 years old. I was brought up in the church. I believe there’s a God, and there’s a Jesus. I believe in that picture, God spared it. Trying to show the people something, but they’re still not listening,” St. Helena resident Eltis Williams Sr. Said.

“God is amazing. Every now and then, He lets us witness miracles. I believe it’s a sign that He’s here,” Jill Dunomes added.

Self says she is going to call the Red Cross for assistance and has set up a GoFundMe.
