GONZALES - Police say a heated argument between two men escalated to the point of murder.

According to officials with the Gonzales Police Department, 66-year-old Johnnie McMeller and 58-year-old Randall Youngblood were traveling together in a vehicle on Sunday.

The driver, McMeller, came to an abrupt stop at the corner of W. Worthy and Quiet Street, and as both men got out of the vehicle they began fighting.

Police say at some point, Youngblood began hitting the vehicle with a piece of metal and McMeller reacted by jumping into the driver's seat, putting the car in reverse, and backing into Youngblood.

Youngblood was pronounced dead at the scene.

McMeller was immediately apprehended and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on one charge of Second Degree Murder.

Police say an investigation into the deadly incident remains ongoing
