Albany could get new school and upgrades
ALBANY - The Livingston Parish School Board plans to ask Albany voters to approve a bond to pay for a new school and several upgrades across the area.
The school board will call an election in April for the $13.5 million bond that would build a new $7 million elementary school for younger students. The money would also go toward a new $4 million gymnasium at Albany Middle School and class room additions at Albany High School. Albany Lower Elementary Principal Kathy Rodosta says she welcomes upgrades.
"This school was built for kindergarten through sixth grade, and then the upper was built as a high school. So just to have a school that is built for our age groups would be the most amazing thing," she said.
Right now the upper and lower elementary schools share the same cafeteria making it difficult to schedule daily activities.
"It takes away a lot of the prime instructional time, because we would love to go to lunch between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and have those extra minutes that are prime instructional time used in the classroom rather than back and forth to the cafeteria," said Rodosta.
Parents in Albany feel that voters should support the future of their small town.
"The children need the proper environment to learn. They need the opportunities. They need the facilities where they can continue to grow, and so we can keep up with the rest of the nation for our educational opportunities," said Jessica Baker.
The school system already owns the land for a new school. Construction could begin a year after the April election.
