State warned day care where child died about its operation prior to death
PRAIRIEVILLE - Records show that an Ascension Parish day care at the center of a 3-month-old's death Monday was operating illegally.
According to the the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a home daycare in the 18000 block of Forest Hills Drive in Prairieville in response to reports of an unresponsive child Monday. The sheriff's office says a 3-month-old was taken from the day care to an area hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Department of Education records showed that the day care was unlicensed and had previously been issued a cease and desist order in June. A representative with the Louisiana Department of Education says the department had tried to work with homeowner for months to get licensed to no avail.
"We aren’t on the hunt to shut folks down; the Department’s objective and responsibility is to keep kids safe. If you meet the definition of a child care center, the sensible thing to do is get licensed," spokesperson Sydni Dunn said. "If you repeatedly refuse to do that, we must move to the next step."
Deputies learned that the 3-month-old was fighting a cold Monday when day care workers put the infant down for a nap. The child was later found unresponsive.
Ten children and five workers were present at the time of the incident.
This investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is pending.
