French Settlement planning community center

FRENCH SETTLEMENT - French Settlement town leaders plan to build a community center near the town hall along Highway 16.

It would be the town's first and only community center in its 50 year history. Five years ago French Settlement purchased 5 acres of land next to the town hall. The community center will be built there and house parties and other events for residents who would rent out the building.

"Right now everybody that needs a community center to have showers and receptions, they have to go out of town to find a place. The closest one right now is in Port Vincent," said Mayor Toni Guitrau.

Guitrau says the town has $100,000 dedicated to the project that could cost as much as $300,000. The center would also be used during storms and disasters as a command center for emergency responders.

"This building will have a safe room in it where they'll be able to get in case tornadoes are hitting," said Guitrau. "When Red Cross comes out after the event then we'll have a place for them that's air conditioned inside and be better all the way around for everybody."

Guitrau hopes to have construction underway within the next year. The town plans to apply for grants to move the project along.
