Broome proposes plan to improve transportation
BATON ROUGE – Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome launched her plan to improve traffic and road conditions hoping voters will approve a property tax increase.
Broome announced her Better Transportation and Roads plan or BTR on Monday. She says the plan will utilize advanced technology.
"A transportation center focused on data and technology that helps us get there that was not in the Greenlight program. That in and of itself is a game changer,” Broome said.
Last year, voters rejected the Greenlight plan to improve roads, however the mayor says her plan is different. Broome’s plan calls for synchronizing traffic lights, adding major software programs and cameras to allow traffic managers to see more intersections and control traffic signals from the parish’s traffic management center.
“Traffic experts say revamping the way signals work will reduce congestion, cut back on fuel cost, reduce air pollution and make our road safer,” Broome said.
The mayor is proposing a $5 million property tax increase to pay for the plan.
"It is clear that voters favor fixing our traffic issues and that they are willing to vote for initiatives that raise the dollars to pay for the improvement,” Broome said.
Broome’s plan must first be approved by the Metro Council and then voters will decide on the tax . The proposal will be discussed at the council meeting on July 26.
