Alvin Gentry introduced as new Pelicans Head Coach
METAIRIE, LA - As the Golden State Warriors were celebrating their NBA championship in the locker room, assistant Alvin Gentry had a message for his new team, and his new star Anthony Davis."
"Hey AD, we're coming right back here!" Gentry yelled drenched in champagne.
The Pelicans announced Gentry as their new head coach Thursday at their practice facility. Gentry calling New Orleans his "number one destination" of all the job openings in the NBA, which included the OKC Thunder.
Gentry plans to speed the pace of the Pelicans offense, something he's had success with in his previous stops. As the associate head coach of the Warriors, Golden State led the league in scoring (110.0 points per game) while finishing 2nd in offensive rating (111.6). In the same position with the Clippers in the 2013-14 season, Los Angeles led the league in both scoring (107.9 ppg) and offensive rating (112.1). As the head coach of the Suns, his 2009-10 squad led the NBA in scoring (110.2 points per game) and in offensive rating (115.3), while making it all the way to the Western Conference Finals.
