Sound barriers coming along I-12 near Essen Lane
BATON ROUGE – An interstate project to build a sound barrier on I-12 is finally in the works.
The project was first talked about two decades ago when resident Cathy Butler called her city councilman asking for a change.
Butler lives along the interstate and says that the sound is so loud that the pictures on the wall in her home shake.
"You can see them. It would move, because the trucks, the sound, the vibration, and its from the sound, so with the sound wall up, that would break that and it would be a lot nicer," Butler said.
Crews are working to build the $2.2 million sound wall. The 19-foot sound barriers will run westbound on I-12 from the Essen Lane overpass to the elevated section on I-12 that crosses Jefferson Highway.
Plans to build the sound barrier have been pushed back in the past because of plans to build an exit ramp. The state now says that there is no need for a ramp and it's time for the sound wall.
Businesses close to the interstate are curious to see how well it will work.
"Hopefully it will defer the sound enough to where if clients are coming and going inside our office, a lot of times I'll walk outside with them, and continue the conversation, with the sound being what it is...it cuts it short because you can't really hear," Jeff Maggio, manager at Pacific Union Financial, said.
Crews will be working Monday through Friday during daylight hours and the state says that if needed it will work on the weekends to meet the October deadline.
