Baton Rouge, LA - "This is for the city. This isn't just for me this is for the whole city."

He's one of the best points guards in the country, Louisiana Mr. Basketball, a 2,000 point scorer and state champion.

Javonte Smart is the first and maybe most meaningful signee for Will Wade for the 2018 class.

"When you're able to get a point guard that other people want to play with and other people know and he's bought into what your situation," said LSU basketball Coach Will Wade, "I can't tell you how many calls from different kids we had who wanted to play with him."

"It's my duty because I'm a point guard and I want to get my team better," said Smart, "And if I want to get my team better I have to go get guys. I love my city and I want to put on for my city and I committed to LSU because I knew it was the best choice for me."

This day is big for Javonte and his future on the court, but more importantly this a moment for him and his father to share. Javonte's dad passed away when he was just 7 years old, something that still hurts to this day but also motivates him to be his best.

"I think about him every day. He would just smile at me and tell me I can do it. He would just smile at me and talk to me and just push me more."

"His dad means everything to him, he was sitting over there nervous and I thought he was going to cry because there is a picture of his father over there on the table. And he was really emotional. If you ever watch Javonte playing sometime and he hits his chest and kiss his hand to the ceiling he's doing that to his dad."

Javonte thankful to have dad looking down and his mom by his side, where she'll be able to watch him play down the road for years to come.
