BATON ROUGE - A building on Florida Boulevard is considered a total loss after an early morning fire.

The fire was reported around 4 a.m. at El Paste Dorado Bakery, near the intersection of Florida Boulevard and North Ardenwood Drive.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the building engulfed in flames. Authorities say a gas line inside the building ruptured from the flames and helped fuel the fire. Crews were also pushed back when the a power line fell as a result of the fire.

According to a release, firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.

“I kinds of teared up when I saw that, just how close it was,” said Cherie Jarreau, the General Manager at Catholic Art and Gifts that sits right next to the bakery.

Jarreau says she’s so grateful to the firefighters for containing the fire that she gave them each a Saint Florian medal. Saint Florian is the patron saint of firefighters.

“You just feel like you have to do something and you feel kind of hopeless,” said Jarreau. “I just wanted them to know I’m grateful for what they did.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
