GONZALES - A high school senior who died after being shot in a Gonzales parking lot was caught in the middle of an online feud between two groups of juveniles, police said Monday.

The Gonzales Police Department said 17-year-old Mekhi Darville of Sorrento was shot outside the Fuel Smart on S Burnside Avenue around 9:40 p.m. Friday. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Police released more information on the shooting Monday, saying that Darville was driving around some of the people involved in the "social media feud" after a football game when they stopped at the gas station. The other group reportedly showed up in the parking lot, and someone fired a gun during the ensuing confrontation, hitting Darville.

A Gonzales police spokesperson said Darville was not involved in the fight.

"We believe that the individual that was shot was trying to moderate between the two groups. I think he became the target between this mediation, and that's why he was shot at," Steven Nethkin with Gonzales Police told WBRZ Monday.

The department said it expects to make arrests in the case soon.

St. Amant High Principal Beth Templet released a statement Monday.

"Dear Gator Families,

It is with deep sorrow that I must inform you of the death of senior Mekhi Darville. We are all heartbroken by the tragic loss of this young man.
