BATON ROUGE- The trial for a councilman in Baker who was arrested for allegedly stealing a moon pie, hit a snag today.

It happened when John Givens' attorney was a no show for the trial. In court, Judge Bonnie Jackson asked Givens to locate a phone number for her so her office could find out why she didn't show up. Jackson even threatened to hold his attorney in contempt.

Givens is accused of eating a banana moon pie and hiding the wrapper. When he got caught, he allegedly flashed a badge and threatened the store worker. He was arrested on theft charges, and was also accused of abusing his power.

Givens ran from WBRZ cameras back in January during his last hearing. Today, he promised to do an interview but took off when he exited the courtroom to a waiting vehicle.

However, he opened up to WBRZ's Chief Investigative Reporter Chris Nakamoto while he was upstairs trying to locate his attorney's phone number.

"I can't believe they're doing all of this over 50 cents," Givens said. "I offered to pay for it. All of this is ridiculous. I lost the election because of this."

Because Givens' attorney did not show up, the trial scheduled for Monday was continued. Givens is due back in court in July.
