BRPD: 10-year-old dies in accidental shooting on Government Street
BATON ROUGE - A 10-year-old girl died in an accidental shooting on Government Street, emergency officials confirmed to WBRZ.
Officials received the call around 4:12 p.m., and the shooting took place around the 1000 block of Government Street at the Sonic Drive-In.
According to BRPD, the 10-year-old's step-father was going into work at Sonic, and the mother was leaving her shift. The 10-year-old and another child, who was related, waited with the car as the parents were inside the building for mere minutes.
In that time, the other child picked up a gun inside the car and accidentally shot the 10-year-old, who was playing just outside the car, a BRPD spokesperson said. The girl later died of her injuries.
"We're doing everything from transporting witnesses to be interviewed at our violent crimes unit, to pulling surveillance video from here at the Sonic to other nearby businesses to exactly find out what transpired," BRPD Chief T.J. Morse said
This comes just days after 8-year-old Davian Nicholas was shot and killed, when a group of people exchanged gunfire during an argument along San Juan drive.
"Within 72-hours we've lost two children, two. We not talking about losing criminals. We not talking about losing grown folk, we're talking about, we have lost two children," East Baton Rouge Metro Councilwoman Carolyn Coleman said.

The location of the accidental shooting resides in Coleman's district, who calls the situation unbelievable.
"I say grown folk, you got to be grown, you got to be mindful of where you put your goods, and keep it out of children's ways, put a ball there, put a book there, put some other things that would be good for our children, but definitely not a gun," Coleman said.
One resident, I spoke with says she is not shocked by the shootings.
"I'm very upset by the fact our gun laws have not been updated, and we're not protecting our children the way we should be, its upsetting that we're still an open carry state, I feel fear everywhere that I go," Baton Rouge resident, Shaniya Warren said.
BRPD Chief T.J. Morse said they are still investigating.
