Volunteer coach's termination causes turmoil at school board meeting
ZACHARY - A volunteer Zachary High School soccer coach was let go after multiple complaints from parents.
The school has not released the reason behind the complaints, but after speaking to parents, they are not happy with things coach Kyle Callihan has said to his players, among other things. Other parents disagree.
"Without getting into any details, it was confirmed to us that no laws were broken, and in light of that very important fact, we're hoping that cooler heads will prevail," one parent said.
Whatever did happen was enough for the school to agree to fire him. Coach Kyle's termination came as a shock to a lot of his players and their parents.
"Behind the amazing coach is an amazing person," Alexis Albert is the team captain. "Behind that coach is someone that cares. Behind that coach is someone who has a family that's also his team, and coach Kyle was our team dad," Alexis Albert said.
A few school board meetings have centered around the tensions between those who want the coach back and those who wanted him fired, but superintendent Scott Devillier says what's done is done.
"We have to do what we have to do and make the right decisions. And of course I understand they don't like the decision that was made," Devillier said.
Last week's meeting saw intense arguing and outbursts. Things got so heated that at tonight's meeting the school board requested increased security. Nevertheless, the team says they won't rest until they get their coach back.
"I want coach Kyle to take every girl for the rest of these years to playoffs," Albert said.
