Speed limit increases for parts of I10 12 into effect Monday

BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced Friday that motorists will be able cruise along at slightly higher speeds on parts of I-10 and I-12 starting next week thanks to roadway improvements made through projects in the Geaux Wider Program.

Beginning on Monday, July 20, crews will be out installing new signage to reflect the speed limit changes on the affected sections of roadway. The impacted areas include:

- I-10 from Essen to Siegen exits (up from 60 mph to 65 mph)
- I-12 from Sherwood to Range exits (up from 60 mph to 65 mph)
- I-12 from Range to Walker exits (up from 60 mph to 70 mph)

The Geaux Wider Program is a $341 million multi-year construction initiative designed to increase capacity along heavily travelled stretches of interstate in and around Baton Rouge with the goal to increase overall capacity. So far, DOTD engineers say the projects have helped to improve safety and increase mobility on Interstates 10 and 12 in East Baton Rouge and Livingston parishes. As of July 2015, three of the four proposed projects are completed with the final section, I-12 from Walker to Satsuma, scheduled for completion by the end of this summer. DOTD engineers say they extensively study speed limits on state maintained roadways to arrive at the most safe and efficient top speed designation. In late 2014, the DOTD traffic engineering office launched a study to aid in determining new speed limits on I-10 and I-12 to be put into effect following completion of Geaux Wider project improvements.

"Our study indicated it is reasonable and prudent to adjust the speed limits on these sections of Interstate. DOTD will work with State Police and local law enforcement to closely monitor safety performance and compliance," said DOTD Secretary Sherri LeBas.
