ST. GEORGE — Mayor-President Sid Edwards, along with St. George Mayor Dustin Yates, held a groundbreaking ceremony for MOVEBR's Perkins Road Project at the St. George Fire Department's Station 61 on Friday.

The $40 million project plans to widen Perkins Road from Siegen Lane to Pecue Lane to accommodate several proposed crosswalks, U-turns, and turning lanes along the roadway.

The Siegen Lane intersection will see the addition of two through lanes on Perkins Road eastbound, with a crosswalk also being planned for the area. Croswalks will also be added to several intersections, including Potwin Drive, Michel Delving Road and Brookhollow Glen Drive.

The Pecue Lane intersection is planned to receive two left turns, both eastbound and northbound onto Pecue Lane.

A new 10-foot-wide shared pathway will also be built along the roadway to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists.

Construction on the roadway was originally slated to take place in the winter of 2024, ending in the summer of 2025.

About 20,000 drivers traveled along Perkins Road every day in 2025, according to a traffic count by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

The "Move BR" initiative aims to deliver fast, safe and reliable transit through both sides of Baton Rouge.
