Fallen police officers of 2014 honored
BATON ROUGE - Three fallen police officers were remembered Thursday at a medal of honor ceremony held by the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement.
It included Officer James Foster Jr. of the Denham Springs Police Department who died days after Christmas when a car pulled in front of his motorcycle while on duty. The somber ceremony brought tears to many family members of the three heroes.
"You know you can never bring him back, and you can't replace what was lost. It does definitely help the heart," said Foster's brother Staff Sgt. Christopher Foster. "My brother was a good person. He always thought of others first. He was very considerate. He was very outgoing. He loved life. He loved his family."
Foster's resume reads like a novel. He was an army veteran, boat captain and pilot. He was also named officer of the year twice in Denham Springs.
"I had to pour cold water on him to cool him down," said Denham Springs Police Chief Scott Jones. "He was always on fire, ready to go. Sometimes you have to fire people up. I had to cool him off cause he was such a go-getter."
Foster is the only officer killed in the line of duty in the history of Denham Springs. The ceremony also honored St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Deputy Carlos Papillion Jr. and Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Deputy Allen Bares Jr.
Next year's ceremony will be at least three times as large since nine officers have been killed in the line of duty so far this year.
