Fake Uber driver robs LSU students, flees scene
BATON ROUGE - Police are searching for a man who claimed to be an Uber driver and robbed three LSU students at knife point early Saturday morning.
Officials say the passengers thought they were getting into an Uber car that they had ordered Saturday around 3 a.m. in Tigerland, and requested that the driver bring them to Residential College, North. When they arrived at their destination, the driver informed the students that he wasn't an Uber driver, but rather a taxi, and requested payment for the ride.
After receiving a small amount of money, the driver brandished a knife and demanded more from the students, authorities said.
All of the students were able to get out of the vehicle without injury, and the suspect fled the scene.
Even though Uber had nothing to do with the robbery, one Uber driver tells WBRZ it's bad for business.
"The minute something like this happens, suspicions are thrown out on drivers," he said. "Next thing from the app itself, you should have a picture of the driver and a picture of the car and description."
All Uber drivers have the symbolic Uber "U" on their vehicle windows, and are required to pass a criminal background check.
