BATON ROUGE - Truancy officials will start warning parents about children missing too many school days.

Monday, the sheriff's office truancy division announced parents and guardians of students who have missed at least ten days of school will need to meet with a truancy officer. Parents who ignore the warning could be arrested.

"The kids need to be in school, plain and simple," Roxanne Welch, the Truancy Center Director, said in an interview on WBRZ News 2 at 10:00 Monday.

There are thousands of truant students and the truancy center is working to get as many as possible back into classrooms. Welch said while warrants are issued for parents, the office would rather work with them to get kids back to school.

"They can face jail time... they can face fines. But, what we try to do, honestly, is we try every way possible to avoid that."

The charges for guardians for truant kids is typically for improper supervision of a minor.

In a news release Monday, the office asked people who need to get students into school and have excessive absences to call 225-389-8617.
