BATON ROUGE — Spots are still open for Louisiana's recreational alligator lottery, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The recreational season runs from Oct. 1-31 across eight harvest zones. Opportunities are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

To be eligible, applicants must be legal Louisiana residents, 16 or older and hunter education certified. A Resident Alligator Sports Hunter License costs $25 and must be purchased before recreational alligator hide tags can be issued. Anyone participating must also have a Basic Hunting License.

There is a nonrefundable $50 application fee for each zone selected. Customers can select and win a harvest opportunity for more than one zone, but each zone requires its own application fee.

Customers may only win one opportunity per zone. So if someone has already won an opportunity in the Zone A lottery, they would not be eligible to win a second opportunity in that zone but could win in other zones that still have availability.

Recreational alligator hide tags are nontransferable and cannot be used on properties already allocated for commercial alligator hide tags.
