Local business wants to re-brand Brandywine condos

BATON ROUGE - Roy Maughan Jr. may be the only man in Baton Rouge who doesn't want to see the Brandywine Condominiums demolished.

"It's about 13 acres of property that's actually well situated," Maughan explaned. "You've got a church on one side, a public school on one side, and a BREC park on the other side."

He, along with the company City Holdings LLC, bought the majority of the condos last August.

The company has big plans to renovate the property it's now calling "Sherwood Forest." They plan on keeping the original buildings and doing a few aesthetic upgrades.

But the City is losing patience. Not only are the condos an eyesore, they've been a recurring setting for various violent crimes. So why has it taken City Holdings so long to do something?

Maughan says they've already put around $400,000 in to the property's cleaning, getting security, and drawing up plans. And it's not the company that's dragging it's feet, its the remaining occupants

"I believe there are a couple of people who are occupying units who say they are there with the permission of the owner. There are no utilities there. There is no electricity or water. It really isn't safe for habitation," Maughan said.

Maughan says they have tried various means to cooperate with the occupants but now have to resort to legal means to get them out.

"Unfortunately now we're trying to resort judicially, to recover under Louisiana condominium laws, for them to participate or to sell. And either way would be good."

If the 19th Judicial Court rules in the company's favor and they are able to consolidate ownership, Maughan says he expects the community will see drastic changes to Brandywine in three to six months.

The Metro Council will vote on whether to condemn the complex on Wednesday, Sept 27.
