PLAQUEMINE - The Iberville Parish School Board has selected Rebecca Johnson as superintendent-elect. This comes after current superintendent Louis Voiron announced in March he’ll be retiring. 

Earlier this month, the Iberville Parish School Board began interviewing the five candidates for superintendent: Rebecca Johnson, Shekeitra Matthews, Dr. Clarence Robinson, Laura Roussel, and Dr. Emily Martin.

The board ultimately decided on Rebecca Johnson as its next leader for the school system. 

"We are here for one reason. We’re here for children, and that’s what our work is going to surround, making sure we’re doing what’s best for kids. Like I said, putting Iberville Parish Schools back on the map because it’s time for us to show up and show out," Johnson said.  

Johnson has worked in education for 24 years, starting as a school teacher. Johnson has served as a principal and assistant principal in Lafourche Parish. She also worked for the Louisiana Department of Education as a School Improvement Support Specialist.

"Decided to come to Iberville in 2023 because I just felt like it was the right time to make that move and become the Executive Director of Academics," Johnson said. "God always places you where you need to be, and I felt in 2023 that’s what I needed to do for myself, for my family, and for the kids of Iberville."

Johnson says she plans to work to make Iberville Parish schools one of the best in the state.

"We need to make sure we’re building trust in this community for the parents, for the kids, for the teachers, for the school administrators. You know that that’s just my biggest goal for us to recruit and have people come back to Iberville and make sure that we’re one of the top-performing school districts in the state," Johnson said.

Voiron is expected to retire in June; at that point, the newly appointed superintendent will take over.
