BATON ROUGE — A new play set in Selma, Alabama, in the 1960s puts a personal face on one of the most pivotal periods in the American Civil Rights Movement.

The story centers on Douglas, a Black man determined to exercise his right to vote despite the many obstacles standing in his way. His worried but supportive wife stands alongside him as the play explores the sacrifices, courage and resilience of African Americans fighting for equality and justice.

Gardner Clark portrays Douglas, the central character whose determination drives the narrative.

Dr. Ava Brewster Turner also joins the production, bringing her insight and perspective to the story.

Turner called the play a "journey of tenacity, of courage and resilience." 

The play is framed as both a reflection of an important moment in history and a personal look at the people who lived through it, including their fears, struggles and hope for a better future.

"Bridge in the Distance" will be performed on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at Southern's Frank Hayden Fine Arts Hall. Tickets cost $27.
