18-year-old charged with negligent homicide after teen injured in Robert crash dies

ROBERT — An 18-year-old from Ponchatoula arrested in connection with a crash that injured two people in Robert is now facing a negligent homicide charge as one of the victims succumbed to their injuries.

According to Tangipahoa Parish deputies, a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man were critically injured on 

Deputies learned that Josean Martinez was driving recklessly in a pickup truck while the man was standing in the bed of the truck, and the teen was hanging out of the rear passenger window, with both holding onto the top of the truck. 

At some point, both victims lost their grip on the roof and were thrown to the ground. The investigation revealed that neither Martinez nor a 13-year-old girl who was present at the time of the crash called authorities and left the scene before authorities arrived.

Evidence also showed that Martinez attempted to hide the truck following the crash.

On Monday, the Tangipahoa Sheriff's Office revealed that the 17-year-old female victim succumbed to her injuries. 

Martinez, who was arrested and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, now faces negligent homicide, negligent injury, failure to seek assistance, obstruction of justice, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and driving with no license.
