Plaquemine High football stadium gets new upgrades

PLAQUEMINE - Plaqumine high school will get a state-of-the-art upgrade to it's football stadium in the form of a brand new turf field.

Crews are working to cut turf mats to correctly fit the field and knock them into place.  They are currently working on the finishing touches, not stopping in the summer heat.

"It is, that's part of the job," Angie LeBlanc of Geo Surfaces said. "That's the nature of the beast."

The Iberville Parish School Board decided against a normal grass field, instead choosing a turf similar to the one used at the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

"They went through a bunch of alternatives," Josh Fontenot of Manchac Consulting Group explained, "as far as what's the best material we can put down to get the best bang for the taxpayer's dollars."

The field will cost the school system more than $100,000 in construction costs. However, the turf could reduce the cost of maintenance, since the field should last for 20 years.

"It's never going to have to be painted again," Fontenot said. "Limited maintenance to be done on the field."

The turf features strong fibers that are denser than rubber.  Installation of the materials was simple.

"You basically scrape off the top layer of grass just like it's sod," Fontenot explained. "Take off the top layer of soil, and you just come in and mix in cement with it, and you basically make a concrete deck."

Construction started in May. The school's softball field is also receiving LED lights, which will be installed before the upcoming season.
