BATON ROUGE - On Wednesday, volunteers, sponsors, and the people who live and love East and West Baton Rouge parishes joined WBRZ for its 17th Stuff the Bus, an annual campaign to collect donations of school supplies and monetary funds to support students in the area.

More than $30,000 was collected at the end of Wednesday.

Buses rolled into the parking lots of the Walmarts on College Drive in Baton Rouge and LA-1 in Port Allen early Wednesday morning.

"It's a long day, it's exhausting, but it's exhilarating at the same time. I've been out here since 5:30, shortly after your crew arrived. By 9:30, we already stuffed our first full bus," EBR Schools Administrative Director of Community Engagement Marlon Cousin said.

Students from East and West Baton Rouge Schools walked the aisles of Walmart, spreading word of the campaign.

"It makes me feel good because I was helping out, trying to help out people, trying to convince people to donate school supplies," Tara High School sophomore Joseph Jackson said.

Jackson's football coach Lawrence Brown called the experience a lesson in togetherness.

"Everything they do is about togetherness, they stuff the bus, they do community service, they do teamwork, constantly working together," Brown said.

In West Baton Rouge, school officials said the turnout was great.

"Every year, the community just comes out, it's what they do," Brusly High School Principal Walt Lemoine said.

With help from sponsors like Lake After Hours, Home Bank and Raising Cane's, supplies were collected for the upcoming school year.

Monetary donations are still being accepted online. Click here for more.
