Mother and child killed in early morning apartment fire on Ridgewood Drive in Maringouin

MARINGOUIN — A mother and her son are dead after an early Monday morning apartment fire on Ridgewood Drive in Maringouin, according to the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office.
Officials said the fire started around 6:30 a.m. this morning. The fire claimed the lives of a 22-year-old Lauren Carter and six-year-old Layton Carter, according to the sheriff's office.
According to the sheriff's office, about 10 to 15 people were displaced by the fire.
The State Fire Marshal Office is leading the investigation into what caused the fire.
Residents woke up to heavy smoke pouring from the complex's roof. The fire department received a call at 6:30 a.m.
Neighbor Jamison Marshall said he arrived outside to find the building already in flames. "I woke up late to everything. Like, when I made it outside, the apartments was in flames. My partners and they mamas and shit was out here crying. Like, I can't even say nothing," Marshall said.
Marshall and other residents tried to reach 22-year-old Lauren Carter and her 6-year-old son Layton but were unable to get to them in time.
"Yeah, we couldn't get to the baby. Like, we tried. We couldn't get to the baby. The smoke was heavy. Like, the door was hot and the smoke was too thick," Marshall said.
Neighbors remembered Carter as someone who kept to herself and worked hard to care for her son.
"You want me to tell you what's the hurtful feeling about this situation with her, man? This a female, like, she go to work and she take care of that little boy, like, she don't mess with nobody, like, she quiet. You wouldn't even know she stay back here, man," Marshall said.
The American Red Cross responded after receiving a call from the fire department at around 10:30 that morning. Workers were on scene interviewing residents. The Red Cross also has mental health available for neighbors and family members of the deceased. Those needing support can call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
