LSP investigating after Gonzales Police officer shoots person in Ascension Parish

GONZALES — Louisiana State Police troopers are investigating after a Gonzales Police officer shot a person along South John Avenue in Ascension Parish.
According to LSP, an officer with the Gonzales Police Department conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of South John Street and Orice Roth Road in Gonzales around 10:45 p.m. on Thursday.
During the traffic stop, the officer made contact with the driver, 21-year-old Anthony Talbert of Baton Rouge, and a female passenger. Troopers said that during the encounter, Talbert reached towards a firearm that was inside the vehicle, causing the officer to discharge his firearm one time, grazing both Talbert and the female passenger.
According to troopers, Talbert fled the scene, leading officers on a short pursuit before being taken into custody.
Talbert was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated flight, reckless operation, obstruction of justice and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The female passenger was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The investigation remains ongoing.
