Independence honors three Vietnam War veterans with Purple Hearts at Tangipahoa Parish town hall

INDEPENDENCE — The town of Independence honored three veterans who received Purple Hearts during a town hall.
The Purple Heart is given to soldiers who were wounded in combat.
"I congratulate each and every one of you," a voice said as clapping followed.
Buddy Rutland, Claude Fisher and Bill Perkins all served in the Vietnam War. Rutland received two Purple Hearts since he was injured twice while in battle.
Honor Guard Richard Ludwig II joined the group during the recognition. Ludwig says Independence became a Purple Heart City in August 2024, which honors service members and their sacrifice.
