BATON ROUGE — About 100 people gathered at the State Capitol Gardens Saturday morning for a nonpartisan "No Kings" rally focused on voter registration and turnout.
Lisa King, lead organizer with Indivisible Baton Rouge, said the event aimed to turn dissatisfaction with current government policies into voting action. "This is a different No Kings; we are not protesting against anything. We are encouraging everyone to get out and vote," said Lisa King.
Organizers said the Baton Rouge event joined nearly 3,000 similar rallies across all 50 states. They said the events had three goals: keeping early voting accessible, safeguarding the right to vote and building a grassroots coalition from coast to coast.
Booths lined the walkway as organizers handed out flyers and door hangers with voting information. Volunteers also spoke with rally participants about resources, including the Geaux Vote app.
"Tells you what is on your ballot, tells you early voting dates, election date, tells you your polls and tells you what district you are in," said King.
Many attendees who had already registered to vote spent time stressing the value of early voting.
"Early vote, you can avoid potential chaos or pandemonium if you vote early so that you can avoid any snafus if you wait till the last minute," said Sarah Rehman.
Early voting runs from Oct. 20 through Oct. 27, with the only day exempt being Sunday. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day on Nov. 3.
"I hope the outcome is that we have the largest voter turnout Louisiana has ever seen," said King.
