Baton Rouge Police looking for red sedan involved in shooting that injured 5 juveniles

BATON ROUGE — Police are looking for a red car they say was involved in a shooting that left five juveniles injured at an apartment complex along Lobdell Boulevard.

It happened at the Pelican Bay Apartments on June 17, injuring four teens and an eleven-year-old. The Baton Rouge Police Department tells WBRZ that it believes an altercation between two juveniles led to the shooting.

"Shortly after the physical altercation, one of the juveniles fled the area. Shortly thereafter, what we know is a vehicle pulled up, about 4 to 5 individuals got outside of a car, stood out and fired multiple rounds," BRPD Lt. L'Jean McKneely said.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, an 11-year-old, a 14-year-old, two 15-year-olds, and a 17-year-old were shot. Police said all of them are expected to survive.

On Tuesday, police said they had not identified any suspects or determined a motive, but did share photos of the car they say the shooters arrived in. The pictures show a red sedan and several people who appear to be firing shots from both rear doors of the car. Police said Tuesday that all are expected to survive.

"The car did not have a license plate. The car distinctively has some damage in front and had some repairs. We haven't been able to locate the vehicle, so we're asking if you see this vehicle, please give us a call. You can remain anonymous in calling," McKneely said.

McKneely told WBRZ that the suspects could be aged "anywhere from 14 to 21."

Several residents told WBRZ that the shooting took place in the front part of the apartment complex.

Residents at the apartment complex told WBRZ on Tuesday that many are still scared about what happened. Many did not want to speak, but Tyaunna Dempsey, who visits the complex frequently, says it is very uncommon for something like what happened on June 17 to happen at the complex.

"When I found out, I was really shocked because, like, I don't know, like the younger generations, y'all have so much to live for, to grow up, to understand and things like that and just to do things like that and possibly throw your life away at a young age, that's like a tragedy," Dempsey said.

Dempsey says it's up to the adults to set an example for the younger generation.

"I just feel like growing up, everybody is trying to be in trends. If younger boys see older boys doing this, they think it's cool and stuff like that, which is really not the way you should be brought up," Dempsey said.

BRPD asks anyone who recognizes the vehicle to call its Violent Crimes Unit at 225-389-4869. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867.
