18-year-old arrested for negligent homicide after deadly shooting on Old Hermitage Parkway

BATON ROUGE - An 18-year-old was arrested for negligent homicide after an innocent bystander was shot on Old Hermitage Parkway, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said.
Arrest documents say Deldrick Duncan, 18, was arrested for negligent homicide following a deadly shooting on March 7. According to officials, the victim was found in a wooded field area with multiple gunshot wounds. 12 shell casings were also located on scene.
During the investigation, detectives reviewed video footage showing three unidentified men entering the wooded area. After a ShotSpotter notification, detectives saw one of the men running from the wooded area while concealing what was believed to be a gun in his pants. While running, the unidentified man saw an EBRSO unit turn onto Old Hermitage Parkway and returned to the wooded area.
The victim was unaffiliated with the three men, officials said.
Officials were able to identify one of the people as Duncan and searched his phone number in the inmate phone system for the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Duncan received a call from his brother, who was an inmate in the prison, on March 17.
The arrest affidavit says that Duncan told his brother that as he and two other people were walking to the store, the handle of his rifle got stuck in his pants. Another person had a firearm with a switch; the suspect with the switch fired his gun, and it broke.
Duncan said no one was struck during the shooting. Deputies say that the description from Duncan matched how the homicide happened.
