BATON ROUGE - A handful of students at LSU have been diagnosed with mumps.

The infection was reported this week and made public Tuesday (2/4/20).

A weekend tennis match was canceled amid the concern, the university said Thursday.  A student-athlete was among those diagnosed. 

"Out of an abundance of caution and in coordination with university officials and representatives from the University of Tulsa and Nicholls State University, LSU Athletics has cancelled the men’s tennis doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, February 9th, at the LSU Tennis Complex. The decision was made following a diagnosis of mumps with an LSU student-athlete."

At least five students tested positive for mumps, LSU has said.  All five students affected live off campus.

The Student Health Center is hosting a vaccine clinic to help keep the situation contained.

Mumps is a contagious virus with symptoms including swollen salivary glands, fever, and fatigue. The Mumps vaccine dramatically reduced the number of outbreaks over the past several decades, but even at peak dosage, the vaccine is 88 percent effective. LSU said all five of the students diagnosed were vaccinated.
