HAMMOND — Five people were shot when gunfire broke out at a Hammond apartment complex Thursday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. at the Willow Villa apartments off Old Baton Rouge Highway.

According to deputies Marquanvius Jones fired into the crowd, 26-year-old Javan Myers fired back. Myers died from his injuries. Jones was struck along with three others including a four-year-old boy.

One resident we spoke with that asked to remain anonymous says she was outside when the shooting took place.

"I was in the garage, and then I heard gunshots and I had ran back inside," she said. "[Another person] ran inside and got me, and I looked out the window and I'd seen a body laying down, and I was scared," another resident added.

The sheriff's office believes the altercation started over a request for a ride.

"There is no excuse for any disagreement to turn into gun violence and this is no way for any argument to end," Tangipahoa Sheriff Gerald Sticker said.

A sentiment several residents also share.

"People just need to learn how to talk and communicate. Situations can just be avoided, that's not the solution," resident Thomas Chapman said.

Chapman says he woke up to the sound of gunshots.

"Nowadays nobody knows their neighbors, nobody knows what's going on on your own block and I never would've expected this on my block, ever," he said.

Jones, 30, is facing second-degree murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges.

The 4-year-old and a 22-year-old woman were treated and released, while a 25-year-old man is hospitalized in serious condition.
