BATON ROUGE — Judge Steven Tureau has resigned from his seat on a 23rd Judicial District bench, according to a letter received by the Secretary of State's Office. 

The Secretary of State's Office received Tureau's letter of resignation on Friday, a spokesperson told WBRZ. 

On Tuesday, an additional letter was sent to the Louisiana Supreme Court informing the court of the vacancy, which takes effect Saturday. A special election to fill this vacancy is not required because Tureau had less than a year left in his term, this letter says.

In August, Tureau was disqualified from running for reelection for the Division D judgeship in the 23rd Judicial District after he did not meet the candidacy requirements related to filing federal and state tax returns or valid extensions for the previous five years.

In June, WBRZ reported that Tureau was facing misconduct charges from the Judiciary Commission after a 2023 dispute with the part-owner of a Gonzales bar.
