INDEPENDENCE — A former Amite councilman was arrested on domestic violence charges Wednesday morning.

Damon Ellzey, 50, allegedly beat a woman at a home along Fleming Cemetery Road on Oct. 24.

When deputies responded to the scene, they found the woman had crashed her car into a ditch in front of the house while trying to escape. The woman had a "significant injury to her forehead," the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said.

A warrant was issued for Ellzey's arrest, and he was taken into custody during a traffic stop on Wednesday. He faces one count of battery on a dating partner with serious injury.

Ellzey was arrested previously in a battery that happened outside a concert at the Raising Cane's River Center on Sept. 4 and was caught on camera.

Footage showed Ellzey and the victim outside of the Koe Wetzel & Ole 60 concert. The WBRZ Investigative Unit previously reported the victim allegedly said a "cuss word" to Ellzey before he struck the victim, knocking him to the ground.

He told WBRZ that the other man was the instigator in the situation and punched him first.

Ellzey was initially booked for simple battery and had his charges upgraded to felony second-degree battery.
