BATON ROUGE-  The Department of Public Works is planning a job fair after struggling to keep and find new employees on the job.

"Sometimes I'll see some people come out and cut then maybe another 8 to 9 months to a year I don't see nobody," said Joseph Muhammad.

Muhammad lives in the Scotlandville area surrounded by overgrown lots, but he works throughout the city and he says he sees the same problem everywhere he goes.

The Department of Public Works said it's been tough trying to retain employees and even tougher trying to find new ones.

"We've got a good number of vacancies across all of the departments, so if we can come out of this with even a handful of good applicants, you know that's going to be a good start," Interim Assistant Chief Officer Casey Chauvin said.

Although DPW officials did not say exactly how many positions are needed to be filled, they say they're trying to fill crucial positions like maintenance workers and traffic signal technicians.

"Just being able to fill some of those vacancies have been a challenge, so we're hoping events like this are going to get us going in the right direction," Chauvin said.

Baton Rouge officials hopes to move in the right direction so residents like Muhammad can see the three-foot weeds in his neighborhood cut down.

The job fair is on Tuesday, Oct. 20th at the East Baton Rouge Parish Goodwood library on the first-floor meeting room.  The job fair will go from 1 pm to 4:30 pm.
