BATON ROUGE — Some business owners and residents in downtown Baton Rouge say crowds gathering on Third Street on weekends are becoming a problem, with fights breaking out and police being called multiple times.

WBRZ first reported on a viral fight that took place outside a bar on Third Street this past weekend. Baton Rouge police data show that in one year at that location, property damage and theft accounted for most reported crimes, followed by resisting an officer and disturbing the peace.

Longtime Third Street resident Chris Wilson said the weekend scene has changed.

"My building is located very close to some of the more prominent bars down here," Wilson said. "On the weekends, there is a problem with a lot of people being on the street, a lot of cars being on the street."

He says with so many people gathering, fights break out sometimes.

Bar owner Daniel Unda has captured the brawls on camera.

"We work incredibly hard every day because downtown is already hard enough, but having to deal with the violence that we suffer from every other weekend, it's bad," Unda said.

According to the Alcohol Beverage Control Board, business owners are responsible for managing crowds.

"If a fight happens in a bar, it's not the bar owner's fault per se, but it's the response," said Scott Wilfong of the ABC. "The bar owner has a duty to report."

The owner of Violet Nightclub described how he handles the crowds.

"What we do is, we like to have at least one security guard for every fifty people at Violet and the second story," David Facey said. "We also have extra-duty. Based on the demand we're seeing, we go up in numbers on that."

As community leaders push to grow downtown Baton Rouge, Wilson said safety should be part of that conversation.
