LIVINGSTON - Mechanics for the Livingston Parish School system are gearing up school buses for the start of another school year.

With more than 300 buses to maintain, the handful of mechanics stay busy making repairs and keeping buses on the road. The mechanics say the most common issues deal with brakes and overheating. They feel their job is vital to get kids to and from school safely.

"It's very important for us, because we don't want any wrecks so whatever it takes to keep them safe to and from school," said mechanic Justin Price.

Supervisor of Transportation Steve Vampran says the school system will get 14 new buses in October. He says around 290 buses hit the roads of the parish each day.

"We try to do our best to make sure buses are on the road and picking up students at the appropriate time," he said.

Students in Livingston Parish start school Friday.
