Safety upgrades coming to Stringer Bridge Road intersections after high number of crashes

Related Story

ST. AMANT - Safety upgrades are planned for two intersections on Stringer Bridge Road after a high number of crashes.

Ascension Parish Transportation and DOTD partnered to add solar-powered flashing lights to stop signs at George Lambert Road and Beco Road. They also plan to add rumble strips to give drivers sound and vibration cues as they approach the intersections.

"We certainly hope that it fixes the problem but we know it's going to be a change from what is out there currently so we hope there is a positive impact," Daniel Helms, the Ascension director of transportation, said.

DOTD crash records obtained by WBRZ show 22 collisions at George Lambert Road during the last five years, including one fatal crash. DOTD reports another 20 crashes at the intersection of Beco Road.

More than 6,000 cars travel along this stretch of Stringer Bridge Road each day. State traffic studies found the intersections do not currently meet the traffic volume requirements for a full traffic signal or stop signs for every direction.

Ascension transportation officials hope to complete the safety enhancements between late October and early November.
