BATON ROUGE - A woman was booked Wednesday after she allegedly shot her pregnant girlfriend during a fight earlier this week.

The shooting happened late Monday afternoon near the intersection of Merganzer Avenue and Mills Avenue, west of Scenic Highway.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Wednesday that the 23-year-old victim's girlfriend, 20-year-old Keiondriah McGee, accidentally shot her after the two got into a fight.

According to arrest documents, the two got into a fight in the car and got out to argue. Police said McGee slapped her girlfriend and the two got in a physical fight. During the brawl, a gun that was tucked into McGee's waistband slipped down her pants and fell.

McGee told police she picked up the gun, tucked it back into her pants and the victim grabbed it. McGee said they wrestled over the firearm, which accidentally went off during the scuffle.

Arrest reports said there were two children, ages two and seven, in the car.

McGee was booked for battery of a dating partner, child endangerment and illegal carrying of a weapon.

The victim is expected to survive.

The shooting came hours after Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome talked about ways the city has been fighting crime to keep the city safe during a press conference earlier Monday.

Broome says her approach for the city-parish is to have qualified law enforcement, addressing mental health issues in the city and finding ways to bring the city together - like her Summer of Hope initiative.

She says the plans have helped slow crime in the city.

"When we look at the level of community engagement, we see results to reduce violence," Broome said. "It's a vision of having peace prosperity and progress for the entire city."
