Engineers tests soil for La. 415 connector construction to begin

PORT ALLEN — Engineers are testing pavement and soil before work begins on the La. 415 connector project meant to ease traffic on the Mississippi River Bridge.
Workers are drilling through the pavement along La. 415 and I-10 to collect soil samples below the road. Engineers are also checking soil moisture to make sure the road will support a high volume of traffic.
"The design for a pavement in a rural part of Louisiana where nobody hardly drives on it is gonna be way different than the pavement thickness and cross section and materials that are used for I-10 and the 415," Gavin Gautreau, LTRC Pavement and Geotechnical Research administrator, said.
The soil samples will then go to a lab to help DOTD engineers design a safe bridge that connects to existing roads and lasts for years.
Construction is set to begin in January 2027.
