BRPD: 4 people injured after pair of early evening shootings in Baton Rouge on Independence Day

BATON ROUGE — Four people were struck by gunfire on Independence Day in two separate shootings that happened about an hour and a half apart, Baton Rouge Police officials said Monday.

At around 5:20 p.m. on Saturday, BRPD officials responded to reports of a shooting along Fairchild Street.

"Once they began to conduct the investigation, it was learned that the shooting actually occurred in the 8500 block of Scotland Avenue," BRPD's Cpl. Saundra Watts said.

According to police, a gray SUV pulled up to the intersection of Scotland Ave. and Robin St., where four people were standing.

"Some persons were inside a vehicle, conversing with a person standing outside of the vehicle," Watts said.

Three people got out of the SUV and began shooting, with bullets hitting two people. One of the victims, a 37-year-old man, was hospitalized but expected to survive his injuries. A bullet grazed a 41-year-old woman, police said.

Around 6:50 p.m., BRPD responded to reports that a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were shot along Sherwood between Lemonwood and Beechwood drives.

Police added that an SUV pulled up alongside the boys while they were walking from a convenience store and started shooting.

"And shots rang out. Two individuals were struck. They were transported to a local hospital, and they are expected to survive their injuries as well," Watts said.

BRPD says there was only one shooter in this situation, and they were in the back seat.

Resident Melvin Carter told WBRZ that he was saddened to hear that the two victims were juveniles.

"I feel that it's sad that youngsters are getting shot at. In Baton Rouge, we need to do something about it, like we really need to do something about it. They're getting younger and younger," Carter said.

Even though both shootings involved an SUV within a short time of each other, police say the two incidents were not related.

"They're two separate incidents that occurred here in the city on July 4."

Both shootings are still under investigation. Baton Rouge police say they are asking for pictures and information on the two s-u-v's. The investigation is still ongoing, and BRPD encourages the public to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
