Bronco Snow at Zachary High teaches teamwork, records and customer service

ZACHARY — A student-run snowball stand has opened on the campus of Zachary High School, giving students hands-on experience running a real business.
The stand, called Bronco Snow, is the newest student-run business at the school.
"It's really hot, it's really humid, so we thought, what better way to combat that than with snowballs?" said Erica Mayes, a Zachary High senior.
The proceeds from Bronco Snow go toward Zachary High's Career and Technical Education programs after purchasing supplies to run the business.
Zachary High senior Carly Bozeman said the stand teaches lessons students can take to college and beyond, like teamwork, record-keeping and customer service.
"Going outside of college, I want to start a business when I grow up. This makes me learn things," Bozeman said.
The stand also puts students in real situations where they have to solve problems on the spot, just like first-time business owners do.
"When a bunch of people come up at the same time, they're like, 'Wait a minute, there's forty people in line, but how do you overcome that and how do we do better next time," said Melissa Brumbaugh, Zachary High agriculture teacher and Career and Technical Education department head.
Mayes said the experience goes beyond just making snowballs.
"Communicate not only with each other working in the snowball stand, but also with the customers we have," Mayes said.
Program leaders said the trailer they use to sell snowballs will also serve other treats, like hot cocoa, when the weather gets colder.
