BATON ROUGE- A woman born and raised in Baton Rouge was ready to live her best life at 45 years old, but breast cancer handed her an unexpected midlife crisis.
Ingrid Bowman, a mother of three, was preparing to become an empty nester in her Denham Springs home when she learned she had triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease. It was detected during a routine mammogram.
With no family history of breast cancer, she was in disbelief.
Bowman's treatment began immediately with several rounds of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. She said she had the best doctor in the world, Dr. Everett Bonner at Baton Rouge General.
Thanks to early treatment, faith, and support from friends and family, Bowman is now cancer-free.
"My number one advice is to get a mammogram regardless of whether you feel healthy," Bowman said. "If you see signs, get your mammogram every year. That's my number one advice. If you are diagnosed with this disease, it is not a death sentence. It's not the end of the world."
Bowman credits her strength during treatment to her faith and an extensive support system of family, friends, and her healthcare team.
She added that she never lost her appetite during treatment- a blessing that allowed her to keep enjoying new restaurants and dishes with loved ones, keeping her spirits high throughout her recovery.
