Breastfeeding classes available at Baton Rouge General

BATON ROUGE — As National Breastfeeding Month comes to an end, Baton Rouge General reminds residents it offers lactation consulting for any mom, even those who did not deliver there.
Crystal Toadvine, a lactation counselor at Baton Rouge General, said new moms receive a kit when they deliver at the hospital. The kit includes tools to help make breastfeeding easier, diapers and wipes, baby clothes and a note from the "Baby 2 Baby" nonprofit workers who pack the duffle bag.
Toadvine said the number one question she gets as a lactation coach is whether moms are making enough milk. She said if newborns have one wet diaper and one dirty diaper in the first 24 hours, they have enough milk.
The dirty diaper count increases each day. A week-old infant should have a minimum of six wet and three dirty diapers.
She also reminded mothers to be patient with the process.
"It's a learning process. It's constantly changing, constantly going to be something different. So don't think you're going to know everything at the beginning, you know, because some moms come in and they're just like, oh, I'm a mom. I'm supposed to know everything. And I'm like, no, you're not," Toadvine said. "You know, babies are different, you know, so even though you've had. We have moms that come in here who are on their fourth baby and just that fifth baby, they're just like, what's going on? This is nothing like the other babies that I had. So every baby's different. So just give yourself some grace."
