Berwick mayoral race focuses on growth, infrastructure and economic development

BERWICK — In a small town of about 4,600 people across the river from Morgan City, Berwick’s Southern charm is part of its identity. But as voters prepare to choose their next mayor, candidates are offering different visions for how the town should grow while preserving that small-town feel.

Campaign signs line residential streets, reflecting a race centered on the community's future, from infrastructure and new housing to attracting businesses and creating economic opportunities.

Candidate Lud Henry, a councilman, says planning for growth and infrastructure will be key to maintaining Berwick’s appeal as more residential communities emerge.

“Planning for infrastructure and growth. Growth. We have some several residential communities have popped up,” Henry said. “So we have a place that people want to live, and we want to continue that to happen.”

Henry’s opponent, Jason Romero, believes Berwick has missed economic opportunities in recent years. He says bringing new businesses and investment into the town is a priority.

“Economic development is such a big deal,” Romero said. “You know, over the last few years, we've been losing companies. But there are other ways and other avenues to bring companies in and get them to invest with us.”

While the mayoral campaign has remained civil, the candidates have highlighted different approaches to Berwick’s future. Henry discussed planning for infrastructure as residential communities develop, while Romero emphasized attracting businesses and investment.

U.S. Census Bureau data puts Berwick’s median household income at $51,580, with 18.6% of residents living below the poverty line.

As voters prepare to choose their next mayor, growth, infrastructure, and economic development remain central issues.

The race for Berwick mayor remains focused on what comes next for the community as residents prepare to elect their next leader.
